What Is a Menopause Doula? (And Why You Might Need One)

Most people have heard of a birth doula. But a Menopause Doula? This is something new — and it might be exactly what's been missing from your care.

When I tell people I'm a Menopause Doula, I usually get one of two responses: a blank stare, or an immediate "where were you five years ago?!" I'll take either one, because both mean we're about to have a really important conversation.

The truth is, the concept of a Menopause Doula is relatively new — but the need for one has existed for generations. Women have been navigating perimenopause and menopause largely alone, often dismissed by doctors, confused by conflicting information, and embarrassed to talk about it with friends or family. That stops here.

So, what exactly is a Menopause Doula?

A Menopause Doula (sometimes called a Menopause Advocate or Menopause Support Specialist) is a trained professional who provides non-medical support to women and people with ovaries as they navigate the menopause transition. We're not doctors — and that's actually the point.

Where a doctor has 10–15 minutes to see you and is focused on diagnosing and prescribing, a Menopause Doula has time. We sit with you, we listen, we help you understand what's happening in your body, and we help you prepare to advocate for yourself in those 10-minute appointments.

💡 Think of it this way: A Menopause Doula is like having a really well-informed, deeply compassionate friend who has done all the research for you — and who will walk beside you every step of the way.

What does a Menopause Doula actually do?

  • Education: We explain what's happening in your body during perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause — in plain language you can actually use.

  • Advocacy preparation: We help you prepare for doctor's appointments, including what questions to ask and how to describe your symptoms clearly.

  • Resource connection: We help identify local and virtual resources — from menopause-informed providers to support groups to evidence-based treatment options.

  • Holistic support: We look at the whole picture — sleep, nutrition, mental health, relationships, and lifestyle — not just your hormone levels.

  • Emotional support: Sometimes you just need someone to say "yes, itchy ears ARE a menopause symptom, and you're not losing your mind."

How is a Menopause Doula different from a doctor or a coach?

A doctor diagnoses and prescribes. A health coach focuses on lifestyle and behavior change. A Menopause Doula bridges the gap — we provide the education, emotional support, and advocacy help that nobody else is offering in those crucial midlife years.

We also don't have an agenda. I'm not selling you a supplement or pushing a particular treatment. My job is to give you information and support so you can make the best decisions for your body and your life.

My own story

I became a Menopause Doula because I just felt so unprepared and alone as I navigated menopause. As a now post-menopausal woman, I look back on my years of perimenopause — the joint pain, the sleepless nights, the brain fog so thick I couldn't find words, and yes, the inexplicable ear itching — and I am still angry that no one helped me understand what was happening. Every symptom was chalked up to aging. Every concern was dismissed. “It’s normal! You’re getting old!” Hip pain dismissed as “arthritis”, hair loss…don’t get me started!

Fast forward to today: the conversation around menopause is finally opening up. And I am here, ready and trained, to be the support I wish I had.
